Marlies van Gent was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and started studying at the Conservatoire of her hometown. She then continued to study at the Amsterdam Conservatoire with Jan Wijn and in Belgium with Jacques de Tiege (Conservatoire Antwerp) and Jevgenia Braginsky Yarmonenko (private lessons, Brussels). She paid special attention to chamber music and the accompanying of singers and participated in several summer courses at Darlington, UK.
After finishing her piano study with a teacher diploma she accompanied at masterclasses in Goslar, Germany, with Erwin Schiffer and André Gertler, gave workshops also abroad like in Portugal for instance. She has been invited in many national and international competitions as a member of the jury.
She has a broad experience in performing solo and in chamber music ensembles. She also participates in a piano four hands duo.
Since 1992 she teaches at The Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, at the Young Talent Department where she runs a class of talented young pianists. With a colleague she has set up a summer course since 2007. Every year a different composer is highlighted and studied, resulting in a final concert per individual pupil.
A substantial number of her (ex) pupils were successful in piano competitions like the YPF, Steinway Competition, Princess Christina Competition, Concertgebouw Amsterdam Competition and the Franz Liszt Competition. Some of her pupils went abroad to work on an international career.
