JIN JU - Piano

Celebrated in China as one of the greatest virtuosos of her country, esteemed by international critics and audience for her technical prowess, her warm sensitivity in the vocal lines and the astonishing clarity of the narrative subtleties, Jin Ju is a rising star in the classical piano world.

Born in Shanghai to a family of musicians, Jin Ju obtained both a Diploma and a Masters in Piano Performance at Beijing Conservatory, then a Masters from the Imola International Piano Academy, a DIploma and a Gold Medal in “Professional Performance” at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and the prestigious “Gold Medal of Honour” from Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena.

Having obtained awards in several prestigious international competitions, among them the Tchaikovsky and the Queen Elizabeth Competitions (Moscow and Brussels), she won first prizes at the China National Piano Competition, the Beethoven Society Competition in London, the UNISA International Piano Competition, the Theodor Leschetizky International Piano Competition in Taiwan, and the Romanian International Music Competition in Bucharest.

Jin Ju regularly plays in all the major concert halls in China and has been one of the first pianists to be invited to perform in the Forbidden City in Beijing. She has played, and plays. in many important music venues in Europe, among them the Berlin and Vienna Konzerthaus, the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Palais de Beaux Arts in Bruxelles. In Italy she regularly plays in celebrated venues like Sala Verdi in Milan, Teatro della Pergola in Florence, Sala Maffeiana in Verona, etc, and is a regular performer in some of the most important concert series.

Jin Ju is establishing herself also as one of the most interesting new names in piano performance on historical instruments. In October 2009 she played a worldwide telecasted “special concert” in Sala Nervi in Vatican City, in front of a 5000-strong audience and Pope Benedict XVI, performing the same evening music from Scarlatti to Rachmaninoff on seven different period instruments (fortepianos and pianos from the late XVIII to the early XX centuries).

Jin Ju has collaborated, and collaborates, with various important orchestras in all five continents. They include the China National Symphony and the Macao Symphony Orchestras, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the Belgian National Orchestra, Orchestra Philarmonique de Lìege and Wallonia Royal Chamber Orchestra, the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, the Oslo Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica “Giuseppe Verdi”, the Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philarmonia Orchestra, the South Africa New Philharmonic and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestras, and many others.

Her recording of the Yellow River Piano Concerto with the Macao Symphony Orchestra has reached so vast an audience in China that it has now been classified as among the “first 10 world successes of classical music”. Her first recording in the West, by the independent label Frame, of the complete Debussy Etudes, received enthusiastic reviews in many of the important CD review publications.

In the summer of 2010 Jin Ju signed an exclusive recording contract with the German label MDG. Two initial CDs were released in 2011: the first in January, dedicated to Schumann, reveived wide acclaim in the press; the second, released in December 2011, and featuring two major piano sonatas, Beethoven’s “Appassionata” and Schubert’s C minor Sonata D958, as well as the relatively unknown “La Ricordanza” Variations by Carl Czerny, has already been hailed by SACD.net as “Wonderful stuff and some of the best piano playing issued this year”.

Her performances have been broadcast on radio and television around the world (NPR “Performance Today” in USA, “Sky Classica” in Italy, “Canvas” in Belgium, the BBC in the UK). Chinese National TV and Radio regularly broadcast her concerts and recordings, and she has received special awards from the Chinese Ministry of Culture. In 2008 the Chinese State Television CCTV produced a long documentary about her life and artistry which was broadcast several times on the principal national channel; in 2010 another documentary was produced by the same channel about Jin Ju’s Italian tour with I Virtuosi Italiani, and was broadcast nationwide in China in November of the same year.

Jin Ju has been a faculty member of the Central Conservatory in Beijing and she has taught at the Royal Northern Music College in Manchester. At present she is Professor of Piano at the Imola International Piano Academ and gives numerous Master Classes in China, Europe and the United States.
