VIOLA COURSE

VIOLA COURSE

PROFESSOR
Antonello Farulli

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Triennial Viola Course is an intensive programme for those who wish to progress, musically and technically, as both solo and chamber musicians. The classes, aimed viola graduates and young students, will be characterized by activities carried out in collaboration with the other string and piano courses.

The course is based on private lessons with the main tutor and with one or more internationally-acclaimed guest tutors. In addition, there will be many opportunities for internal and public solo and chamber music concerts.

LESSONS / FREQUENCY
The lessons, individual or collective, will normally take place between November and June.
There will be a minimum of 35 hours of lessons per year for each student, and the lessons will be distributed evenly over this period.
The course is divided into 4 sessions per month, for a total of about four hours.
Each student will organize his/her own personal calendar of lessons with the teacher. It is expected that one of the lessons/lectures will be given by an internationally-acclaimed guest tutor.

Each candidate, upon enrollment, must commit to the entire course since his/her place necessitates the exclusion of other candidates.

Exceptions:
- Applicants who wish to benefit from a greater number of hours may, upon enrollment, choose the Intensive Course Option, comprising 40 hours per year (5 hours per month).
- In exceptional cases, we will consider requests for Half Courses of 15 hours per year.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME
Every year the course entails the study of pieces suitable for competition and audition preparation. At the beginning of the course a detailed work plan will be compiled with the tutor: this will include public performances, i.e. concerts and technical examinations.

Every year there will be 2 exams: a technical verification test during the winter and a final exam in June or September.
The programme of these examinations will be agreed upon during the year with the tutor, and should reflect the level attained by the pupil.

Performance classes will take place according to a schedule worked out by the tutor, for a minimum of one performance per month; each member is required to participate in at least half of them, or 4 performance in the year. These performances can be recorded in audio and video format, and these can be made available to the pupils.

TECHNICAL VERIFICATION TEST
The Technical Verification Test requires the performance of a full set of scales to be set at the time of the examination (major, minor, double stops and arpeggios) and two relevant studies, suitable for the level of each student.

END OF YEAR EXAM (June or September)
A programme of approximately 60 minutes comprising:
• a concert or a piece for viola and orchestra from the established repertoire;
• a solo piece;
• a virtuoso piece;
• one or more pieces selected together with the tutor.

For students under the age of 16, the programme will be adjusted accordingly.

ADMISSIONS
The number of student admissions is limited, and is determined on the basis of rankings in the entrance examinations.
The Entrance Exams will be held at the end of October, and the exact date will be published on the Academy website.
In the case of a written request of particular interest, an exam may take place during the academic year, but will still be subject to the rankings list.
